Was trying to do some updates and I 'emerge -C device-mapper' because it was blocking some packages thinking I could reinstall it. I have the feeling I shouldn't have. If I try to reinstall it, I get the error below.

Code:

$ sudo emerge -p device-mapper

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1  USE="(-selinux)"
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/udev-146-r1)
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.51-r1)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

('ebuild', '/', 'sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
    device-mapper

My machine is currently running fine for now, but I'm afraid to restart it. Is there anything I can do to fix this while it's still running? I don't like removing the blocked packages shown.

You should be ok... if I remember correctly the latest stable udev overtook the device-mapper functionality. The correct thing would be to unmerge device-mapper and update udev. I too no longer have device-mapper on my system:
Code:
# emerge -pv device-mapper

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1  USE="(-selinux)" 0 kB
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/udev-146-r1)
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.51-r1)

If you are nervous about rebooting, make sure your world is up to date... or at least do an `emerge -DuN system`.

Minor correction: device-mapper was merged upstream into lvm2.
