I am a littel bit afraid just to remove device-mapper, isn´t it an important system component? What is the best procedure here? Thanks a lot ..

I believe that new udev version 'deprecates' device-mapper. Here - look:
Code: | $ emerge --search device-mapper udev
Searching...
[ Results for search key : device-mapper ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]
* sys-fs/device-mapper
Latest version available: 1.02.24-r1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of files: 188 kB
Homepage: http://sources.redhat.com/dm/
Description: Device mapper ioctl library for use with LVM2 utilities
License: GPL-2
...
* sys-fs/udev
Latest version available: 146-r1
Latest version installed: 146-r1
Size of files: 527 kB
Homepage: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html
Description: Linux dynamic and persistent device naming support (aka userspace devfs)
License: GPL-2 | It *should* be fine to remove it. Just don't reboot before emerging udev. _________________

Thanks, what would happen if I reboot anyway? Is my system borked then? Just for understanding .. _________________ Desktop AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 32GB RAM, Asus GF GTX 1060.

If this is a work system then don't take my advice. I'm just telling you what I would feel fine doing.
...Actually, I would feel fine doing this on my work box as well. _________________

hi all!
i had the same problem. my solution was to unmerge device-mapper, then emerge the packets left, and then emerge lvm2 instead of device-mapper (device-mapper is blocked by the newly installed udev package).
the only thing i wonder is, why device-mapper package is still under development if it is merged into lvm2...

Maybe this is a stupid question but anyway ..
I just read that the device mapper is managing multiple disk volumes. If I dont have such a thing like raid volumes or similar, but just a single harddisk. For what purpose do I need device-mapper or lvm2?
I know I never installed such a think manually so it came into my system by dependencies, therefore i assumed it is an essential component without my system wouldn´t boot anymore. Is this the case or can I just remove and forget it?
thanks

The big thing that has hit me with this is that my wireless card is no longer working. I'll dig around and see if it has something to do with NetworkManager |

I just removed device-mapper and restarted the world update. I works. Thank you all for your advice.
