Cant play multiplayer games quake3

99.9% of the time when I try to play mutli player games with quake 3 I get the following errors right before it closes.

I can play 1 person games without any problems. I know that the gfx files that it is looking for are in the pak files.But for some reason it cant find them. I also have the quake3 demo installed it hase no problems doing multi player games. I tried replacing the vm files in the full quake game with the one out of the demo quake game but as you can geuss that didnt work it came back with the error:

Any body have any suggestions on what might be going wrong. Ive tried to install it with emerge and the point reliese either way I get the same exact errors. The really maddening part is thame for some reason everyonce in about 100 tries it will actually work like its trying to tease me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
