This typically happens when I'm editting video heavily (rewinding, splitting, pausing, re-playing, etc.)

It's definitally kino itself. It was encoding video for 2 and a half hours without crashing, so I'm assuming that was ffmpeg doing the work. I'll try degrading kino and see if it is the version or of it's the libraries backing it up.

I'm having this same problem (segfault when editing/rewinding). Does anyone know if there is a modern commercial video editing program for Linux? At this point I'm willing to pay cold hard cash, because *nothing* I've tried does the job for video editing in Linux. Cinelerra, Kino, and KDEnlive are all crashy as hell, to the point of being unusable. This has been going on for a few years now on two pieces of hardware, and I have a pretty stable system otherwise, so I'm assuming it's not my hardware (note that I have no problems dumping video from my dv camera - it's in the editing phase that things crap out).

I'm just exhausted with it already. I'm almost at the point of plunking down money for a Windows system just to do video editing.

Alternately if someone has a system running very stable for any of these above programs, please list:

(a) Your hardware
(b) Your software versions

I'm getting pretty desperate at this point. Linux literally fulfills *every other computing need I have* which, in a way, makes it doubly frustrating.

I am using:

Code:

I was able to significantly improve the stability of this application, especially during rewinding/shuttling, by changing this setting in Kino:

Preferences-->Display-->Display Method-->Reduced XVideo.

I'll try that next edit.

Still crashes after about a year. lol

I've been reading that a lower version of ffmpeg may make this more stable (the libavcodec specifically). Can someone running a stable kino installation tell me what ffmpeg package they are using?

ffmpeg: Latest version installed: 0.5_p19928

Kino: Latest version installed: 1.3.3

With this combination, I have no stability problems. I think it crashed once in the last 8 or 9 projects I edited - the really poor performance I was experiencing last I posted is completely gone, in terms of stability. Give that combo a try. If it still doesn't work maybe we can dig deeper.

What flags are you using?

Could it be another library?

Code:

I can assure you you're not alone.
kino-1.3.x is particularly unstable. And if you try capturing DV passthrough, as opposed to from DV tape, you'll also find the "noavc" button is also nonfunctional. (I get around this by using dvgrab -noavc instead.)
Personally, I had better stability back in the days of 0.7.x up through 1.2.x (and associated ffmpeg versions).

I have not diagnosed these problems but my gut feeling says crashing during editing may be caused by icon generation for the leftmost panel. Kino itself seems to be doing the right thing, as you can prove when you recover from a crash at startup --- the last edit is still there --- but in general the clip icons behave oddly. Often the topmost icon takes the image of the one you're currently working on, for example. And that would explain where some of these avcodec messages are coming from -- it has to decode a frame to get the icon. Just a guess. :-/

I've had enough, I'm going to start my search for an alternative editor.
