Ok, I've been using Gentoo for almost a year now. As far as I'm concerned there's nothing better. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is this: say I here about or need some small specific program "coolprog". How can I determine what package to emerge to install it. I've tried vary search options for emerge, qpkg, etcat, etc. etc. to no avail.
I'm sure it's something easy -- I just haven't found it. |

[img:440312ee6d]http://www.genmay.com/images/smilies/google.gif[/img:440312ee6d] Seriously..it's a pain in the ass, but there is no other way. AFAIK, there's no index of all the files that all the ebuilds produce. Someone was talking about making a db for it at one time, but I'm guessing that fell through. So google'ing for asking/searching in the forums are your best bet. |

Chances are that package X isn't in portage yet, but somebody else has already written an ebuild for it. I always search bugzilla and the forums, as they've never let me down once... |
