emerging mplayer hangs when checking for freetype

Title says it all. I have no idea what it causing this. I tried removing and reinstalling freetype+deps. Removing and reinstalling mplayer+deps but the problem persists.

Ideas?

What is in config.log after it has been hung for a minute? Are there any unusual processes running? What is the output of emerge --info ; emerge --pretend --verbose media-video/mplayer ; emerge --pretend --verbose media-libs/freetype?
