|

I recently installed Gentoo Linux 1.2 and overall have been quite pleased with the result. I have noted one "odd" behavior of my installation ...
When I log in as a user other than root and attempt to su, I receive a "Permission Denied" response after entering the root password. If I attempt to access something with KDE that requires root priveleges (eg. Adjust Time and Date) I am prompted for the root password, but upon entering it KDE responds with "Incorrect Password". I can log in as root using the password that fails in the above attempts.
What's going on? |

Are you sure you belong to the 'wheel' group? This is required in order to use 'su'.
This is easily checked (and altered) in KDE. System -> KUser. |

Thanks. Adding users to the wheel group solved the problem. |

This is covered in the gentoo FAQ as well as here, here and here. (as well as about a thousand other places)

Sorry...
I did do a forum search on 'su' which returned no matches. |

Yes, that is a problem. Searches on words of 3 or less characters are not
supported. Has anyone found a way around this? _________________ Dew knot trussed yore spell chequer two fined awl ewer miss steaks. |

There is no real trick about it until you know words with less than 3 characters aren't searched. Once you know, you have to be more creative with your search. In this case, "Permission Denied" and selecting the "Search for all terms" option returned numerous results containing 'su' in the title. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

For others just joining us, part of this thread has been split out here. (sorry -- should have posted a link earlier...)
