I have read a few pages and they all say different things. I want to know how to speed up emerge. would --quiet work? or do I need to install a portage GUI to help?

--quiet will help you on slow terminals (ssh, serial terminal, etc.)

A gui is almost guaranteed to slow you down.

Look into ccache.

My guess the calculating dependencies part. I've noticed my daily "emerge -uavDN world" getting slower the last couple of days. Hopefully not a linux-2.6.31 side-effect.

best tip by far ive seen is mounting /var/tmp/portage on a ramdisk... works for most things aslong as its not too crazy of a compile. like say openoffice lol..

A 2G tmpfs worked for everything i've tried (except openoffice of course): glibc, gcc, kde4, gnome, 2G was enough for all of these. Also for emerge --sync, I've no tips, but since I've switched to SSD, it's basically just a few seconds of "sh*t scroll by" - meaning that it's super fast.

...Because there are many ways to tweak Portage for minor to major gains. Instead of asking which is best, try some for yourself and decide--but it's hard to beat moving Portage's temp directory to RAM.
