I'm curious, is this project still going?? Is a GentooBSD fit for a full install and stable for day to day computing??

I tried to install it once on a different laptop I had but failed. I could never even get the hard drive partitioned and it just was not working right, I figured that the guide I read must have been out of date because it just did not work and I tried over and over.

Anyhow, if I were to try again, is there any more advantages to having GentooBSD than there is to have Gentoo Linux, or even freeBSD???

Thanks,
~Shawn

Hello,

I know some French members (and moderators) use FreeBSD, and I guess they also use GentooBSD. Let's hope they will see your message :)

To my knowledge it's the same FreeBSD with portage instead of ports. Somebody please correct me if it's not so. Setting USE flags instead of messing with pkgtools.conf is much easier indeed, despite what die-hard BSD users might say.
I've run FreeBSD for long time, never wanted to switch to Gentoo BSD though, mostly because I do not want to lose mainstream FreeBSD experience. Even had it installed on my Thinkpad.
What partitioning problems you had?

Not sure if it's still going, if it is it should be as stable as FreeBSD. Expect some fiddling of course, as it comes with Gentoo. ;)

You should ask Geekounet about that actually.

Well, I've not used it since more than 2 years now, and I don't have any idea about current project status. When I used it, it was a bit unstable and I ripped it off when it broke my libc, and I installed a real FreeBSD instead. It's far more stable, complete and usable, and I find ports far better than portage. ;) I don't use Gentoo anymore since 8 month actually, I fed up with it and GNU and Linux. ;p

According to the gentoo-bsd mailing list it's still alive. Actually there was a GSoC project about Gentoo/NetBSD this summer ;)

OK, but what does Gentoo compared to BSD Ports ?

BSD ports is also source-based, 100% maintained by BSD team, 100% BSD, working with makefiles.
Gentoo is a "prefix", adding features, using python...

Except the "USE" flags, I don't really see which gain it brings to BSD.

In fact, the portage tree and the BSD tree use the same category at least and they seems to be very alike.

Maybe he talked about the package manager.
