Each time I updated recently, it broke Portage on both my Gentoo boxes. The lack of reliability is unfortunate.

There was that time when it thought that xfree-4.3.0-r3 was a binary package that had missing "info" chunks, and I had to wipe /usr/portage/distfiles and /var/tmp/portage, and resync to fix.

There was that time when someone had released something that depended on >=xfree.4.3.0-r3 before that version had been unmasked, and I had to edit the ebuild manually.

There was all that fun with openquicktime which took me a while to fix.

Now I read that portage-2.0.49-r13 is seriously broken. It's getting so that I daren't update. Is this version totally screwed or is it safe? If it's broken why is it still in the Portage tree? Looking at how badly this version of Portage has screwed other systems, I really do not wish to install it.

Is it safe? I really am scared to emerge sync; emerge --update world.
At the moment my Portage tree is in this state and will remain so for a while I think.

boutros root # emerge -p --update --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Code:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r13 [2.0.49-r3]
*** Portage will stop merging at this point and reload itself,
recalculate dependencies, and complete the merge.

Reading between the lines, developer ppl, I love Gentoo and thanks for all the hard work, but you are alienating every single Linux newbie away... What can be done with Portage to make it ultra 100% reliable? All these screwed updates have to become less frequent!

One way to avoid getting your entire system full of blockings ect is to stop updating world. Becase i don't realy think there's sequrity holes etc in all programs you update. Keep your eyes open for bugs, holes etc and update the specific program insted of your entire system. One way to solve the problem. But ofcourse it would be nice to have a up-to-date system :D
