I finally had time to let my computer do an emerge kde last night, and I get up this morning and config X, start it up, find that my mouse doesn't work.. do all that good stuff.

Well, I'm finally down to only 1 problem, which may not be a problem, but a feature I don't like. Basically, the desktop is.. 4 times too big for my monitor. I can scroll across the desktop. Anyway, I don't like it. I looked as much as I could for it and have decided I want to stop looking and ask. In the X config file, I have the gfx chipset set as i810 (not i815, which is what I am really). my monitor config is perfect, according to the Caldera installation (which I knew was GUI and would give me all the info I needed).

Help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

when you set up X you must have enabled this option...it asks if you want it after you choose your screen resoulutions....rerun xf86config and say no this time and it should be fine

ok, thanks. I'll give this a try. And then, I get to spend a day reinstalling Gentoo onto my primary hard drive. I love it, it runs recent things (KDE3) much better than Caldera did (Insert other praise here).. Hopefully when I reinstall I don't goof anything up.

the option Rommel is referring to is Virtual Desktop. There's been a lot of posts about this here, so search the forums and you should find some more information.

When you run xf86config, and you configure what resolutions you want to use for each depth, start from the highest res you want to use, and then go lower. If you start at say, 640, that is the primary res X will start with.

Hi
Maybe that helps:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 0"
Device "voodoo3"
Monitor "VX700"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

If you have
Virtual 1024 768 (resolution can be different), remove it from all "Subsections"

gl

Use different names for
Device "xxx"
Monitor "xxx"
:)
