Upgraded the other day and now my desktop is black, no icons, no right (or middle, or left)-click menu. Go into settings manager (desktop) and set background image and/or color - no change. Check menu - yes, middle click should show one.

Thought maybe it was legacy junk in xorg.conf - removed it completely (evdev config works fine). Originally didn't have intel drm loading - fixed it. Checked and I have XVideo and Xrandr capabilities.

This is just my workstation at work; my home workstation (using radeon instead of intel) is also 32-bit, and upgraded fine.

I renamed ~/.config/xfce4 to ~/.config/xfce4_old and ~/.config/xfce4-session to ~/.config/xfce4-session_old and started X - no change.

I can functionally get work done, but the black desktop is very disconcerting (except screen saver still works), I miss desktop icons, and REALLY miss the right-click menu.

In a Terminal session, invoke xfdesktop, or double click on /usr/bin/xfdesktop in Thunar. That will start the desktop. Then exit, making sure to save the changes. Once you log back into Xfce, you should have your desktop, and all the other goodies (right clicking) along with it.

Blessed be!

Thanks a lot for this post. That saved me as well. I also had to manually run xfce4-panel to recover my panels, though.

Yeah, the new Xfce has a few bugs in the mix. I've noted the loss of desktop and the loss of panels myself. I've also noticed that at times, Xfce has a hard time shutting down. Worst so far; running Xfce messes with the KDE-3.5.10 menu. It comes back, but you have to mess with the KDE menu directory to get things back.

I still like it, although I only run it rarely. I'm a KDE-3 kind of guy.

Blessed be!
