ok first off im fairly new to linux and a complete noob to gentoo. The only distro Ive tried before a week ago is Mandrake 8.2 The reason im metioning this is so hopefully if anyone responds to my post they wont assume I know anything because I dont.
Anyhow my question is after installing gentoo and setting up Xfree and kde I wanted to make a login for myself. So I emerged superadduser being as it seemed the easiest way to do.
All went well except when I log in as the user I cant use the su command whenever I do it tells me that permission is denied. Ive also tried doing it with the wrong password on purpose and that gives a totally different message. So I know im using the right password .
Any help as to what I might be doing wrong is greatly appreciated. |

Check out the FAQ, search for wheel. While you're at it, search for "wheel group" using the forums search, too. Add your user to the wheel group if not a member already as many have done before you. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Ahh, Ive read the FAQ and searched the posts but still no luck.
What used to happen,
Code: |
bash-2.05a$ su root
Password:
su: Permission denied
Sorry.
bash-2.05a$
|
But the I read the FAQ!
So now I get
Code: |
bash-2.05a$ su root
Password:
su: Authentication failure
Sorry.
bash-2.05a$
|

Did you log out, then in again? Groups are set at login. There are ways around this, but for the most part, you have to log out and in. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

You should be able to omit the "root" and just type "su", as it defaults to root. You need to type root's password at the password prompt, not your user's. Can root log in normally? The last field of root's entry in /etc/passwd should be a valid shell, like "/bin/bash". _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Ok, really weird development. I corrupted my version of portage, so I had to reinstall from the stage_ppc_2.tbz2 (originally installed from the stage 3 PPC ISO) and when I added user to wheel this time su worked??? _________________ I'm so small, I can fit under the door.
