I just got my pathetic p200 gentoo box up and running. Now I have a problem with sound. Did a search in the forum and tried a couple of solutions but none worked for me. Maybe I am just dumb or something.

I am using an ISA sb16 on this very old box and it worked fine with mandrake. Just wondering if I have the problem because it is ISA and gentoo thinks that ISA sucks and shouldn't exist anymore.

Ok, let me go over the steps I did.

1. Go to /usr/src/linux and do a make menuconfig
2. Choose all the options blah blah including the sound one.
3. Exit the program and save all changes.
4. Do a make dep
5. Do a make bzImage
6. Do a make modules
7. Do a make modules_install
8. Copy bzImage from the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to /boot
9. Reboot and hope everything goes well.
10. Run mpg123 only to find disappointment. :(
11. Still hopeful and tried running KDE but got an error msg /dev/dsp is not present.

:(

Ok my 2nd question. How to enable mouse in the console?? I hate it when i can't copy and paste stuff.

Oh yeah!!! finally found gpm. I knew about it from some searches in google but apparently I can't seem to locate it in the portage foldersat first.

*erects*

For fella newbies, just type "emerge gpm" to install the mouse driver.

Then do a "rc-update add gpm default" to make it autorun everytime u reboot

Edit /etc/conf.d/gpm. For me I am using MOUSE=ps2 and MOUSEDEV=/dev/psaux

Do a "/etc/init.d/gpm start" and start copy-pasting shit all over the console!!! :D

It doesn't seem to have any problems with kde. Beginner's luck. :D

Now i need help with my sound card.

Yes. Well, use alsa.

emerge alsa-driver
follow the desktop help, which you can find here on gentoo.org.
I use it with my SB64Gold and have no trouble whatsoever.

I have a soundblaster 64 AWE ISA card. I did this:

emerge isapnptools
compiled sb support into the kernel.
added isapnptools on bootup.

It appears that xmms wants to use alsa for some reason, so I emerged that too, but I don't have it started at boot.

I had it start somewhere in the init scripts... I dumped pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf and then I went thru and edited it

thanx for the tip. Finally got alsa working but /dev/dsp still doesn't exist so I can run only alsa apps. :/
