hi all,

recently i got a sparc 5 # home, ultrasparc sun4u.
256 MB ram, 400 MHz
20 gig drive.

I managed to get the install correctly untill the kernel compilation...
i can't seem to get the kernel smaller then 4.1 meg... :(

is there a anything that takes up lotsa space in the kernel that we don't ned, or can use as a module?

I'm not familiar with sparc systems at all, so this is all first and new for me, although i have a year or 2 experience with gentoo on x86

please advise...

Hi,

first, its a Ultra 5 and not a Sparc 5 you got. If you cant get your kernel size below ~3.6 with modules, its safe to use `strip` on sparc64 to remove debug symbols from vmlinux.
If that doesnt work, you should really check your .config if you dont have stuff like firewire, bluetooth or whatever set.

BTW, my kernel even doesnt have module support (and therefore doesnt use modules) and it builds at around 3.3 MB... and I even have USB and SCSI support built in.

make sure you have removed SCSI support ... the U5 uses EIDE, and SCSI is unneeded and takes up huge chunks of space in the kernel and is usually on by default.

also, try stripping back as many fancy features as you can (like support for chipsets and graphics cards you dont have, etc) or building things as modules

GenTimJS

thx man discovered that :-]

i know squat bout ultra 5 so need to learn a lot...

freed up my kernel till 3.5 meg
so tonite, i'll finish the job (vcron, metalog etc)

would it be possible to use it as a desktop, or would it be to slow?
otherwise, i'll set it up as my server :-]

perhaps, i'll install a jabberserver on port 8080 (for proxy @ work avoidance :-])

greets

i have KDE running on mine.

its too slow for newer games (i run stuff like doom on it, but cant make quake compile so i cant speak for its speed .. quake under solaris 9 tho ran great) but if you dont mind waiting a few extra seconds for apps to launch then its fine.

my u5 is a 366mhz with only 128 megs of ram, and it serves up mail for my domain as well as serving as a desktop workstation, its a pretty reliable machine

I'm running a u10 (pretty much the same box) as a desktop quite happily. I'm using fluxbox rather than that hideously bloated three letter desktop environment, it's nice and fast...

ja, thats worth mentioning.
if you use a more lightweight window manager, you can gain a bit of speed easily.

using KDE (primarily since i share the box with stupid windoze users who want everything to act like windows) slows down the box a bit for games, if you use a more simple window manager (and thus have more system ram availible) you can count on games and whatnot performing much better

still no hardware acceleration yet tho ....

ok

thanks for the input guys...

Gentoo installed great, untill i had to boot :(

can't seem to get the silo found... tried everything...

about the desktop, i only use flux or e16 as wm so shouldn't be to bloated...

this wouldn't be a gaming pc, but only a server so even in thzat scenario i shouldn't be using X (security i think)...

neway i'll try to get silo working first....

greets
