hey.

i'm seriously interested in aiding the development of ia64 gentoo but (having hardly used the itanium architecture) i'm having problems configuring elilo to boot from a kernel. the box already has a unix installed (msclinux) but there is no 'boot from cdrom' option. what was the general strategy you guys have used to boot into gentoo? did you just install the stage1 targz into a directory and then build a kernel? did you use an older x86 livecd to boot into a shell (what i was trying to do)?

any tips on this situation or general guides to using elilo+efi are greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Hello.
If you already have an Unix running, you should look for the "chroot" command, and read the 'alternate method' from the site docs. The principle is to mount all needed partitions and then chroot to the fresh and clean filesystem in order to begin the install as normal.
And when all is done, as there is no elilo ebuild, you might prefer the use (and reconfiguration) of your other Linux to add your new system.

So, have a nice trip in the gentoo install !!!

Hey,

If you are still thinking about installing gentoo on your Itanium - you might want to take a look at my thread about doing just that here:
