X Freeze

  • Quote

Post by SoulSe » Tue Oct 07, 2003 10:58 am

My X keeps freezing. I am using GDM + Gnome.

It only freezes at certain points. Here are two examples: Whenever I open Mozilla/Firebird and try to type an address in, X freezes and if I open Gnibbles, I can move the snake around, but the moment I touch a 'fruit' X freezes up. These are two of the most obvious places.

It freezes so badly that I need to hit reset - no ctrl+alt+anything will work.

I have tried switching drivers from nvidia to nv and tried different builds of the nvidia kernel and glx. I'm quite sure the problem isn't the drivers.

Use is set to "X gtk gnome -kde -qt" - Pretty standard stuff. I've tried some other combos as well.

I have an itching suspition that this could be keyboard related, but how to tell?

Please help!

Hi SoulSe,

if you think it could be the keyboard, maybe you could post, which you use and you configured it (which driver you use) for X.

What about the rest of your system? Please post it. Often there is hardware which is known to behave strangely (often in combination with other hardware).

Please try to give some mor information.

Did you try a wm like fluxbox, kahakai or even XFCE4 (i know that it is no wm) if you do not want to use KDE?? Maybe you could see if these also freeze.

The only other WM that I like using is Fluxbox and since fluxbox is a gnome WM shouldn't it inherit most of Gnome's problems?

I will try fluxbox anyway, just for analysis sake, but I want to use Gnome, so I'd like to get that fixed.

My hardware is: AMD Athlon 500, 128MB RAM, Geforce 4 MX 440. Genius Netscroll mouse and my keyboard is a dead simple US.

I used the normal "keyboard" driver with pc101.

EDIT: Before Gentoo, I used Mandrake and my X was fine, so I tried copying my old XF86Config file from Mandrake and use it with Gentoo, no luck, still get the freezes.

Only if you're actually using Gnome, since first and foremost Fluxbox is a window manager; partial Gnome support (i.e., which makes it suitable for using as a window manager with Gnome) is just one of its features. If you start Fluxbox or another window manager without Gnome (e.g., from a plain .xsession), you won't actually be using Gnome or those Gnome features, you'll just get plain Fluxbox. If it turns out that using plain Fluxbox works fine, then your problem might be with Gnome itself, or with whatever window manager Gnome is using (metacity?).

One other thought: have you tried the nVidia troubleshooting guide? (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia_tsg.xml) There are a few things mentioned in there that may help with system lockups.

Just saw this thread:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=94424

The problem described there sounds similar to the one you're having.
