Hello first to all here, I just aqquired said SUN machine, and took the oppertunity to jump into Gentoo as previously I had been using x86 Debian stable / SuSE / Redhat.

After a lot of screaming I managed to get everything running well, even most of the Kernel errors that show up along the way (screaming helps, see?) but then just as I was about to be happy I realised something! Erk!

I had put a hacked up copy of the Sparc Gentoo Install Doc into an OpenOffice file (hacked up to exclude PCMCIA and so on) for printing, ended up just reading it off the screen of an old laptop. And just realised the HTML to .SXW could of gone better. As it worked out I got the impression the make.conf file that was in the stage3 tarball looked good enough, ort he Documentation was a bit weird. So I have been basing my system on the included file.
Now I come to look at the HTML file again I noticed I lost the table formatting on my version and now, well the CHOST makes more sence.

My actual question is:

Should I start again with a MODIFIED make.conf, or should I continue with the system as it is?

It's all working, I have only emerged a few things, irssi for example. But I have no built my Kernel with this setup. Although again, it works.
I started from stage3 because I only have 64Mb ram in my machine, sadly. And naturally that can hinder compilation somewhat!

Well I think that's about it, hope I have not killed anyone with the long post for a short question!

Cheers,

James.

Continue as is. Modify your make.conf to suit your needs/desires. At some time in the future, preferably when you are away for a week or 2 ;), you can always use the following to recompile your packages to reflect your updated make.conf:
Code:
emerge -eu world
or
emerge -eu system

Thanks blademan, Thru less missunderstanding of documentation and a few Q&A's here I'm starting to understand the waythings work, I did a re-install anyway though last week because at the time was not sure what to do! Most vital things I now know are -f and --resume, thanks to my severe online time limitations per month, those help a LOT ;=)

When I do -eu the world, it's gona definitly be a -euf!
