How to Set Enviroment Variables for GLX??

I think i found something that will help speed up performance..

ANISOTROPIC TEXTURE FILTERING
I know when this is off in Windows, 3D and Quake 3 Don't run as nice and fast as it can.. and I notice that there is and option for it in Linux also.. Defaulted to Off enless you set it.. Excatly what i was looking for.. But i'm not sure how to use Enviroment Variables..

Code:

Automatic anisotropic texture filtering can be enabled by setting
the environment variable __GL_DEFAULT_LOG_ANISO,  The useful values
are:

__GL_DEFAULT_LOG_ANISO  GeForce/GeForce2/GeForce4 MX Description
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
  0     No anisotropic filtering
  1     Enable automatic anisotropic filtering

__GL_DEFAULT_LOG_ANISO  GeForce3/GeForce4 Ti Description
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
  0     No anisotropic filtering
  1     Low anisotropic filtering
  2     Medium anisotropic filtering
  3     Maximum anisotropic filtering

So how do i use and set __GL_DEFAULT_LOG_ANISO ???

Thankd for the Tips... But now i seem to have having a problem getting these variables to load on startup.. I've tried both the /etc/rc.conf and /etc/profile.env but no matter what after i start up and goto a shell and type env there not in there?? What do i have to insert these enviroment variables so they are loaded by the system and stay in the envioment???

Thanks!!

-- update..

Nevermind i figured it out.. /Home/.bash_profile now everything is running super sweet... finally.. hehe what a quest to get Linux running, then Quake 3 in Linux.. hehe well it's all worth it.. =) YAY

ansio and fsaa look great in q3a
u might wanna disable fsaa if the frame rate drops by too much
but aniso is a must! =) texture look so good
and vsync is great for 2d games,, like emulators(zsnes)
