I tried running emerge rsync today and it downloaded most of it and got to a point and then just solidly froze (no ctrl-c, ctrl-alt-f2, etc.). I hard-reset my computer and tried again. it did the same thing over.

The first time I installed gentoo I had these problems before and blamed it on my misconfigured non-devfs kernel.

After reinstalling everything worked alright up until today.
Now I'm having the troubles again. well I was, since the last time I cant even do an emerge. I get this error:

Quote:

emerge

1. How can I Clean up after this.
2. Any ideas on how to fix/avoid these lockups? I tried searching the forums but didnt find anything.

Could be a problem with your portage, what version of portage are you using? There are MANY threads regarding these kinds of issues with portage. You may want to search again with the term portage. You can start here though. You also may want to look into doing an emergency recovery of portage, also something you can find in the forums.
