That seems to be working...installing now. Thanks _________________ Things you might say if you never took Physics: "I'm overweight even though I don't overeat." - Neil deGrasse Tyson |

I'm having some issues installing. I tried to download the thing that downloads the Lich King shenanigans, because I have my account set up to do the 10 day trial thing, but it just says "cannot read data from the internet" or something like that. The patcher up to that point worked fine... _________________ Signature is out for lunch. Feel free to talk to its empty desk. |

I'm getting strange stalls for 4 seconds every few seconds where the whole machine freezes up for 4 seconds on my NVidia (96.43.09) with WotLK. This almost seems like some sort of DDoS, as ssh sessions also are affected - as if interrupts were shut down for 4 seconds or so. Currently using Wine-1.1.14, and WotLK 3.0.8-2... Anyone see this issue? For sure, this makes the game unplayable, even to just "Auction House" stuff.
Seems, as far as I can tell, this is only happening on my GF4 MX420 machine. The machine appears frozen for 4 seconds (no keybord, no mouse, no network) and then unfreezes, leading me to believe there's some software issue...
I don't see any warnings in my kernel message buffers...very annoying.
[EDIT: I found out that I actually do get NVRM: xid warnings in the kernel. I think this issue may have not been due to just the new nvidia binary blob update, but rather due to an aging GPU/dirty GPU fan.] _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

hi
is there any method of running WoW from installed version ?
I have installed version on my FAT partition (now I have windows almost only for playing WoW), and I'd like to use existing installation (after new installation I would have to download all patches [I have 0,5Mbit conneciton and I dont have downloaded patches - I've removed installation execs, all plugins, configuration of plugins ......)
Is it possible ? |

I started playing Wow on Linux using a existing Win-installation. I copied the "World of Warcraft" directory over to my ext3 partition though, since it seems to me that it runs a little faster than on fat32.
All I had to change was to set the config.wtf to use opengl instead of d3d - but this might not even be necessary even more, since wine support for d3d improved greatly since I first used it.
So far - a few patches later - it still works fine. |

Anyone had luck with the 3.1 PTR? I'm getting
Code: | EXXOR #0 (0x85100000) Assertion Failture
Program: G:\World of Warcraft Public Test\WoW.exe
File: .\CGxDevice\CGxDevice.cpp
Line: 2701
Expr: (index + count - 1) <= 255 |
Seems to be a indexing-of-video-cards issue, based upon my rough guess-timates. |

Hi,
I'm trying to run the trial version of WoW. My problem is this:
Starting the trial client with wine works well, so far. It downloads for a while and then shows me a start screen from where I can click "Play". When I do that, WoW tries to change my screen resolution. This leads to either a black or a garbled screen. Either way, I cannot do anything until I kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-BS.
What can I do to avoid this? My preferred outcome would be that the screen resolution stays the same and I could play WoW on 1920x1200 . Failing that, can anybody tell me a way to make the screen resizing possible? (and reversible too, because on 1024x768 I cannot use my desktop for much else (call me a wimp if you wish, but I've grown accustomed to having a lot of screen real estate)).
Some info that may be of interest:

Try to adapt the resolution of WoW maually using the Config.wtf file. All the necessary settings should be in there. |

Tariella, thanks for your quick reply. It did not solve my problem though. Rather, a new problem appeared.
First, changing the resolution of my screen now succeeds (well, somewhat), after I changed the "Display" SubSection in my xorg.conf to contain
Code: | Modes "1920x1200" "1024x768" | That's good, but not good enough. Because:
Second, I changed the file World of Warcraft Trial/WTF/Config.wtf to read
Code: | SET locale "enGB"
SET videoOptionsVersion "1"
SET gxResolution "1920x1200" | But the screen is still resized. The gxResolution option is ignored. Anything I did wrong? Wrong Config.WTF? Wrong syntax, maybe?
Third, and fatal: WoW crashes. Here's some output from the crash dialog:
Code: | This application has encountered a critical error:
ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: Z:\home\helge\World of Warcraft Trial\Wow.exe

I don't know about the 1920x1200 resolution. I'm running at 1280x1024. As I read on the WoW forums other people are having problems with that resolution too. If the game doesn't detect that your hardware is capable of this resolution it won't let you set it even by Config.wtf.
I'll post my config.wtf later when I am at my box with Wow installed. |

Got it working now. Starting as "wine Wow.exe -opengl" fixed the problem.
Well, almost. In Fvwm, I couldn't get the window to display. With KDE 4.2, it works fine. Apparently it needs a compositing window manager (although I haven't tried any other window managers to test this hypothesis). There's just this tiny bug that when I switch workspaces in KDE, the WoW window doesn't show up, but I chan reach it from the task bar.
1920x1200 was no problem once I had WoW running, I just set it up in the game's options.
Good enough for me!
I got a different issue on my laptop, but that turned out to be wine's fault:
Code: | winecfg
wine: created the configuration directory '/home/helge/.wine'
err:process:__wine_kernel_init boot event wait timed out
Segmentation fault
|
I guess I should leave it at that. This game got me hooked so quickly, installing it on my laptop is probably a Bad Idea(TM)...
UPDATE: When I run WoW in windowed mode (instead of fullscreen), it even runs under FVWM, or any other non-compositing window manager I tried. So, everything's fine. |

is ther a gentoo how to anymore? all i get is broken links on google.
i have an ATI card(x1950 pro). atidriver 8.582 and i have 3D rendering and eselected opengl. i get about 7500 fps with glxgears.
i just finished the installation but its EXTREMELY slow when it starts up, after i click on the icon from the wine menu. it takes a few minutes for the "play game" window to pop and i never got inside the game yet. are there any tweaks for my card i have to do? it took me about 2 months to figure out hjow to get gentoo running properly and now i cant figure out how to get WoW owrking...the whole reason for switching from ubuntu to gentoo. please take it easy with the sarcasm and help me out. i already know computing is not my forte. |

more info:
seems i am having trouble updating to WotLK. i have downloaded the tome installer, 3.9 gb and the Installer.exe, through the online blizzard link. if run the installer with wine it takes me to a "play wow" window, with no option of installing the expansion. i click play, it says updates are ready for donload on exit/logout. i enter the game, i dont loginto any character, i just exit, then nothing happens, no update.
if i start the burning crusade wow.exe with wine, it will start nicely, with the wotlk start page (the ice dragon). however when i try to select characters it says my account is able to play the latest expansion but i dont have it installed. i looked in the burning crusade folder and there are a bucnh of patches as well that mustve downloaded on updates..including the 3.0.xx update.
i dont know how to put all of this together and crank the game on. |

Seems if you have your account upgraded, you need to have the full data for the appropriate expansion installed.
I *think* $WOWROOT/Data/lichking.MPQ is enough indication you have the second expansion (Wrath of the Lich King) installed, and $WOWROOT/Data/expansion.MPQ for the first expansion (The Burning Crusade). The startup screen will have the undead frost wyrm if you have all your patches and have the capability to login to the realm with any account (Version 3.X), specifically unupgraded accounts. This just means the data is there for you to login with an old account and you can see the artwork of people who have the expansion "can see, cannot get".
I used the release DVD to install WotLK, not sure what's in the downloadable version. Check what's in your Data directory... Mine has
common.MPQ (2.2G), common-2.MPQ (2.4G)- supposedly Azeroth and Kalimdor
expansion.MPQ (1.9G) - Outlands (The Burning Crusade)
lichking.MPQ (2.5G) - Northrend (Wrath of the Lich King)
patch.MPQ (1.4G), patch-2.MPQ (0.8G) - I think these contain artwork for unupgraded accounts.
I heard of someone installing the base install and WotLK DVD and getting tBC data installed without explicitly installing it... which is a bit weird (brought a death knight to outlands just fine) AFAIK you do need tBC to play a death knight, so tBC data is necessary. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

in the $WOWROOT/Data i have a enUS folder, a common-2.mpq and common.mpq, expansion.mpq patch-2.mpq patch.mpq.
so from what you say i only have burning crusade and 2 patches, which makes sense, it is exactly what i described in my previous post. i need to fogure out how to install lich king. i have the dvd and have downlaoded the tome file (3.9 gb) from blizz website. (see above for my probelm) |

The 'trial' install should basically be the full game, it's only the account that differs between trial and regular.
I thought the exact command posted worked as is, or you can just mount it for everyone to read. Just specifying 'nohide' seems to do the trick in mount options. Then simply running the installer on the dvd with wine should do the trick. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

i ran blizzard repair and it added some files...and it runs now.
i get ~10 fps in dalaran facing the crowd at 5pm central on a friday with opengl with minimum settings at 1024x1056 (um, it might be wrong but its lower than 1280xXXXX). im gonna try to run it as the only X server but otherwise i dont know what other tweaks to ad.
this is my hardware:
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
GPU: ATI Technologies Inc RV570 [Radeon X1950 Pro]
should i get higher fps based on your experience?
also:
do i have to re-emerge anything if i have made changes in xorg.conf? |

ok i want to start wow as the only X desktop. right now i have it setup that when i type startx it goes into kde directly.
i tried typing Code: | startx wine "/home/bobby/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/World of Warcraft/Wow.exe" | when i am out of X, but it goes right into KDE.
how cani undo the Code: | echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc | i have done so that X gopes right into KDE? i tried deleting the xinitrc file but X still goes into KDE automatically.
is there any other way i can have wow start outside of KDE? with wow as the only X desktop? |

thank you all for all the help. i will take a look at you script soon.
i got wow to start as its own X server by typing the following as user BEFORE i log into X.
Code: |
$ xinit /usr/bin/wine "/home/bobby/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/World of Warcraft/Wow.exe" |
i get similar frames to being inside KDE, but it seems a bit more choppy and quick to respond.
FPS
i get about 12fps in Dalaran with low population at ~12 pm Sunday Central Time. i have the resolution at 1680x1050, antialiasing 6x, vertical sync refresh enabled, and the other tick below it enabled for removing delays (i forget what its called). All other effects are turned to MINIMUM. this is running it with openGL.

my hardware is slow slow slow... When my GF4MX420 was working it was getting single digits frames per seconds in Dalaran, basically unusable. My RadeonHD 3650 when that machine was working was getting teens. I have most settings to minimum and these are Direct3D numbers, as the minimap never worked for me when I run in OpenGL mode.
Unfortunately all my WoW-capable Linux boxes stopped being able to play WoW for some reason...
GF4MX420 - card died
RadeonHD 3650 - keyboard/mouse stopped working after X11 update, no longer syncs properly to my LCD panel through KVM.
Intel G965 - unknown failure after software update. Teens/high single digits in Shattrath - slow as well.
*sigh* _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

I haven't had too much problems with wow+wine+alsa, make sure wine is compiled with USE=alsa... (and make sure your sound system is working with native apps too).
Might also want to check through winecfg and make sure the audio tab has alsa checked properly, and possibly driver emulation enabled. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
