|
|
Before I start downloading a bunch of files over my 56k modem connection, do apps which build for the Gnome 1.4 panel (e.g., XMMS, gaim) still fail on emerge if Gnome 2.0 is already installed? Can I turn off the panel functionality if they do using a USE variable? (I could remove "gnome" from my list of USE variables in /etc/make.conf, but wouldn't that hose up GNOME support for other packages?)
I've searched the forums and the docs, and can't find a straight _and_ up-to-date answer ... |

I had the same problem a few hours ago trying to install GnomeICU, Xmms and Xchat.
But I solved it by removing the gnome flag from my USE variable (just put a '-' infront of "gnome") and I installed all packages succesfully and after the installations were finished I removed the '-' from gnome. In case I need it sometime in the future _________________ Regards David. |

most packages now depend on gnome-panel-1.4.x instead of gnome-core, and will thus cooperate nicely.
This gives a simple upgrade path between the desktops, and the possibility of downgrades as well.
So, yes. things should work. _________________ For immediate answers, @gentoo.org :

Ah, cool.

Quick question: Will these older applets work with the GNOME2 panel, or do I need to be running the GNOME1.4 panel to accept these applets? |

I'm also having similar problems, since i upgraded to gcc 3.1 and gnome 2,
apps like gabber and qtella create separate windows for icons that should ( i think ) be on the gnome pannel. ( icons such as the online status for gabber)
Another interesting thing was in Xchat, theres a button called "dock to panel" when i pressed this it actually loaded up the gnome 1.4 pannel ( i think ) down the right hand side of the desktop.
Any help would be appreciated, not having a moan just adding a bit more feedback

While I'm still on gcc 2.9.x, XMMS works well with GNOME2 panel ... more testing required. |
