I find myself switching back and forth between kmplayer and xine. I've noticed some mkv files causing excessive frame drops in the mplayer backend that the xine ffmpeg backend can handle. However I like the mouse wheel shuttling in mplayer over the arrow keys nav in xine for some things.

In random order :P

I use a lot smplayer lately, but vlc is pretty nice too.

If I had to choose, then I would pick mplayer.

I almost always use Kaffeine (xine) but now that there's no Kaffeine for KDE 4 yet I use SMplayer. As you can see everyone has his or her favourite one, so you'll have to decide yourself :) . If you use KDE then Kaffeine is the first choice otherwise I'd go with SMplayer and if you're not happy with it, you can try VLC, which is supposedly one of the very best players available even on Windows platform...

(gnome-)mplayer here or occasionally vlc

Will probably switch to vlc permanently if I can get it to play upnp streams from my mediatomb server.

I don't know if I'm right on that, but if you compile mplayer with the gtk Use Flags, you endup with a big warning saying that Gmplayer is no more supported or something.

Yes you are right. It shows suggestion to make kmplayer or gnome-mplayer instead of gmplayer -> how lame.
I still wonder why mplayer USE(gtk) != gnome-mplayer.

vlc seems to give me lowest cpu usage with 720p content, so I started using it exclusively - works great.
