I want to see a list, marked by NEW or UPDATE, of all the things an rsync downloads, instead of just the total # of files it downloaded, so I can see new packages that have shown up via the rsync.

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Well you can kind of tell whats new since your last rsync but it's obviously not the best way... just scroll up _right_ after the ending stats and look at all the new files it brought in.

Your suggestion would definately be welcome by me as i hate to do a subsequent emerge -pu world right after i rsync to see if any of my own files were modified. Some notification right after rsync'ing would definatly be better as I'd be able to see what else I havent downloaded (but might want to) has changed ...

Maybe someone will come up with a nice awk or sed or othe script to take the output
and convert it to a more readable form. Or like Jesse suggested, scrollback and read.

[root@host ~]$emerge rsync|tee /tmp/somefile
[root@host ~]$ awk '/ebuild$/ { FS="/"; OFS="/"; print $1,$2; } </tmp/somefile

If you like, put the tee'd filename somewhere stable, and make a shell alias for the grep line in your shell defaults.

Cheers,
