emerge just started hanging last night, right after the dependency calculation:

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> emerge xxx/yyy to /

and just hangs there.

Is anyone else having a problem? I was thinking that maybe the server I am emerging against was down, but then I thought everyone else would be having the same problem and I haven't seen any posts... nothing has changed on my box since yesterday, except for restarting it... all other networking works fine.

that was the ticket...

further question, why does that happen? What is odd is that emerge didn't even begin to generate traffic (tcpdump)... was it just on hold due to that stale pid file? If that is the case, and my newbie understanding of the Gentoo system is not completely flawed, wouldn't it make sense to do a check for stale files like that when emerge starts?

The file contains multiple pids. One or more of them could have been 'recycled' for active processes that have nothing to do with emerge, which could explain the hang, I guess.
