I'm trying to install gentoo linux on an alpha DS20 server. However, when I try to use fdisk to partition the system disk, I don't get the results I expect. After completing fdisk, pressing w to write and q to quit, I cannot continue as I have no /dev/sda1 or other /dev/sda# devices. Only the disk /dev/sda itself is present. If I run fdisk/dev/sda again, it shows the partition table I laid out, but this is not reflected in the device tree. If I use cfdisk, the devices show up, but my understanding is that I cannot use cfdisk if I want to use SRM/aboot to boot my system. Can anyone provide insight?

Thanks.

Are you using BSD disklabels?

Tips are here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-alpha-install.xml if you're not already using it.

On the next reboot, when the device tree is re-populated, the devices will show up. Then you can continue...

Yes, I'm using bsd disklabels, and no, when I reboot, the device tree does not get repopluated with the devices. Something else is wrong. Any other ideas?

OK, so the problem was my boot iso - I was using an experimental build, and fdisk wasn't working so well in it. When I tried -test4, everything worked fine. Doh.
