Well I am 2.5 days into this adventure (for the second time, so the total is 5 days and counting) and I have run into a roadblock (again). I am trying to get 1.4_rc4 working on a Sun Ultra 5 / 360 Mhz / 256 Mb machine. I did everything the same as the install instuctions. Well there were obviously some changes, but the partitioning is the same (hda1=/boot 83, hda2=swap 82, hda3=whole disk 5, and hda4=/ 83) and I used ext3 for all but the swap space. I did a stage1 install and compiled all of the neccesities into the kernel. I made silo.conf look exactly like the example and copied it over to /boot and it tested fine in both spots. I then rebooted and there is when the problem set in.

devfsd starts ok and then I get the following:
______________________________________

modprobe: Can't open /etc/modules.conf
modprobe: include /etc/modules.conf failed

modprobe: Invalid line 135 in /etc/modules.devfs
______________________________________

It bombs out and gives me a read only file system. Can anyone tell me a way to make my filesystem writable from here? I don't understand how the /etc/modules.conf can just go missing.

Line 135 in /etc/modules.devfs is include /etc/modules.conf

If there is any info that woulld be more helpful please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

that should be contained in baselayout (thanks bazik)

boot back up with the cd, and chroot in as you normally would, and run 'modules-update'.

Thanks. I know I can use chroot to get a rw filesystem because i tried that this morning and got in. I will try the modules-update when I get home from work.

Well that fixed it. I had a couple of other things messed up as well. I finally got to the login prompt. What a great adventure. I'll see what kind of other obstacles are yet to overcome. Thanks for the help.
