gnome emerge error

i get the following error when i try to emerge gnome ("emerge gnome") (during the emerge on one of the packages):
Code:

!!! ERROR: gnome-base/gnome-panel-2.2.2.2 failed.
!!! Function einstall, Line 343, Exitcode2
!!! Einstall failed

i did emerge sync just before as i got a similar error, but at the end of emerge sync it told me to update my portage how?, could this be the prob
