Laptop locks when I insert my PCMCIA card

I have recently installed Gentoo 1.4 and am trying to get used to it having been reliant upon Redhat and Mandrake for pretty much doing it all for me.

I have Dell C810 that has a mini-pci card all working A OK, but want to be able to use my PCMCIA card slots for wireless devices (Cisco and Orinocco).

I emerged pcmcia-cs and it al seemed to work, I did an rc-update etc whic again worked. When I insert my pcmcia card it competely locks up the laptop !!!

Have I missed out some vital steps, or am I just being dumb about something ?
