emerge -v xeasyconf error

I have just bootstrapped and recompiled my kernel and it is booting correctly. When I tried to emerge exeasyconf I got the following error:

Do I not have something set right? I set the SYNC variable in make.conf to north america and left all other parameters commented. Do I perhaps need to emerge a different package before xeasyconf?

I did an ifconfig -a and saw that my network adapter did not have an ip assigned to it then looked back and found that I forgot to edit the net script and rc-update. Once i did that and rebooted I can now connect fine.
