I'm trying to install a parallel printer, an HP DeskJet 712C.

I've got the following modules up and running:

lp
parport_pc
parport

I have a /dev/lp0, but as far as I can tell it's completely ignored. Both of these resulted in nothing happening:

echo "testing" > /dev/lp0
echo "testing" > test.txt && cat test.txt > /dev/lp0

My kernel log says this:

Code:
Sep  7 16:44:13 [kernel] parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP(,...)]
Sep  7 16:46:02 [kernel] lp0: using parport0 (polling).

Removing / reinserting the printer cable doesn't cause any new messages to appear, but I don't know if parallel ports are aware enough to recognize new devices. Should I see new messages?

I've installed/configured cups using the appropriate drivers (hoping that it was just some console strangeness that prevented me from printing) but test pages sent via the cups web interface also quit without providing any useful information.

I've looked around http://www.linuxprinting.org and http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml but neither offered any suggestions as to how to fix this. Similarly a quick search of the forums were no help.

Take care,

Cael

Note that I downloaded and used 'HP-DeskJet_712C-pnm2ppa.ppd' from http://www.linuxprinting.org. After that didn't work, I tried the foomatic-configure route and seemed to experience the same issue.

sessionID's guide ( https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=22291 ) doesn't give any new insight, really. I'm emerging ghostscript now but I really don't think that'll magically make things work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

After emerging ghostscript and pnm2ppa I seem to be able to print via lp and the cups test page kind of worked (my print job choked halfway through).

Hopefully printing from a cups-friendly package (I'm emerging Oo.o now) will show definitively that my printer now actually works.

Thanks for your eyeballs. :)

Let me guess, when you issue the cat command the printer light is blinking but the printer doesn't do anything ?

In the gentoo printing guide ( under user docs ) there is a small note under this section - HP printer need a CTRL-L at the end of the Document.

If you modify the text like this :

Quote:

Hello Printer
^L

It should work fine.
I set up my HP 5L on my box last night and I was a little befuzzled at first too until I spotted the note fpr HP Printers ;-)

man thanks for your response . . .
I read the comment, but since it didn't point out to load the lp module
I had forgotten the tip by the time I got my /dev/lp0 device !

saved me much screaming, swearing, and printing at the computer lab at school :-)
