mattes, I think your downloaded files are broken.
Do a Code:
rm /usr/portage/distfiles/NVIDIA-*
and remerge again.
Thx, that was right, file was not complete. I've downloded it direcly from nvidia an get another error now.
Whats goin on here?

Unable to emake HOSTCC=i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc....
I get the same error (trying 180.08, 2.6.27-gentoo-r3).
.... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth
doing as simply messing about with Linux ...
(apologies to Kenneth Graeme)

I was getting this problem, not sure why but it was fixed by using the berkano overlay ebuild rather than the one in my local overlay.

Probably because you're missing some patches from the files directory...

The Verdict: Well, after a week of usage...I would say these drivers a mixed bag. They've fixed a lot of rendering and performance issues, but it is also clear that these drivers have introduced some rather substantial memory management issues, which brings my rather powerful system to a crawl after 8 or so hours of uptime. This has a dramatic impact on Firefox and Compiz-Fusion after a period of time.

Crawling around the nvNews forums, this is confirmed by the large number of thread entries discussing this issue. But, these drivers also introduce some terrific new features. Hopefully, nvidia will get a few more betas out soon to address the memory usage problems. This is to be expected is such new beta drivers, of course. I definitely see that nvidia is moving forward agressively on improving the quality of their linux support. Just be aware that memory usage is going to go way up using these drivers and it seems a reboot seems to be the only way to get things back to normal.

I think I read somewhere in the nvnews forum that disabling composite (for ex. bling, kompmgr, compiz?) brings down the memory usage temporarily. Then you can again enable composite and work on your machine for some time.

Other than the memory consumption, this driver update also breaks suspend. Hibernate is already non-functional since the earlier 173+ drivers (first of all it takes more than 2min to resume and then the video doesn't resume with tuxonice).

I get the same error (trying 180.08, 2.6.27-gentoo-r3).
I have the same, I go to /usr/src/linux and "make" the Kernel, if done i again merge the
nvidia-drivers and now works :) hmm the drivers need a compiled Kernel directory(or so...)

Does XvMC come to the 8000- and newer series cards yet? I don't have any 7000-series cards.

Why would you need XvMC, when you have vdpau?

Can MPlayer take advantage of that?

nVidia provided patches for x264, ffmpeg and mplayer so far. And AFAIK, these Patches are already in upstream CVS/SVN Repos...
VDPAU is still experimental, but I think it will get "stable" soon and till then, other players will support vdpau, too...

BTW: VDPAU is the planned replacement (at least from nVidias sight, but AFAIK, Intel, AMD and VIA have their own plans, too) for XvMC.

x264 is an encoder, while vdpau is a decoding API, so no x264 patches. For ffmpeg and mplayer, the patches are not yet in svn, they're still way too experimental for that and lack features (deinterlacing, osd and subtitle display). But they're available and at one point will be part of ffmpeg/mplayer.

vdpau (Video Decoding and Presentation API for Unix) is a nvidia thingy, though it theoretically could be used by other graphic cards as well. Ati has gone their own route with XvBA (Bitstream Accelerator). No header file or patches are available for XvBA though, so nvidia is ahead of the game for now.

I'm trying to digest the nvidia-drivers-180.08.ebuild from page 3(?), but it always fails with

Code: Select all

!!! Couldn't download 'NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-180.08.tar.gz'. Aborting.
!!! File NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-180.08.tar.gz doesn't exist, can't update Manifest
Can anyone confirm this error? It seems as if nvidia (re)moved this driver.

that file/driver doesn't exist:

remove:

Code: Select all

X86_FBSD_NV_PACKAGE="NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-${PV}"
,

Code: Select all

x86-fbsd? ( http://us.download.nvidia.com/freebsd/${PV}/${X86_FBSD_NV_PACKAGE}.tar.gz )
and

Code: Select all

~x86-fbsd
from the ebuild

then re-digest it & emerge

Have you built the kernel? It recognizes it by finding the specific files that are linked/created using make or make prepare.
My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

What are the implications for MythTV? I ask because I plan to build a HTPC in a couple of months.

I installed version 180.08 of nvidia-drivers and nvidia-settings. I am quite amazed... that they worked in the first place. :) Not really, but I am glad. I just began using them, so really it's very difficult to verify this objectively, but things do feel "snappier". I'm using Gnome with Compiz-Fusion.

update: just tried with the new 180.11, problem remains the same :(
and if it's relevant, installed gnome is version 2.24.0 from the gnome-overlay.

did anyone else but me noticed a corrupted screen with the 180.8? as far as i can tell, it seems related to gnome or gtk-applications. k3b is the only kde/qt-application here and seems not affected. see the screenshot for an example. sometimes it seems, that the screen is redrawed only partly or not at all. this is only with this new version 180.*, all previous version were ok. any idea?

update 2: just to be sure, i tested some things. it is not compiz. disabling compiz did not help. another thing i recognized is, glxgears gives me about 1400 fps with 180.11 and about 2400 fps with 177.80. yes, i know that glxgears is not a benchmark and that's why i ran the unigine benchmarks which gave equal results. so i'm absolutely confused where to start searching. i really expected more performance with my core2 duo 2,5GHz, Geforce 8600M GT, 4GB RAM combination of hardware. any idea, where could be the bottleneck and how to investigate to find it? need more info? let me know.

update 2: just to be sure, i tested some things. it is not compiz. disabling compiz did not help. another thing i recognized is, glxgears gives me about 1400 fps with 180.11 and about 2400 fps with 177.80. yes, i know that glxgears is not a benchmark and that's why i ran the unigine benchmarks which gave equal results. so i'm absolutely confused where to start searching. i really expected more performance with my core2 duo 2,5GHz, Geforce 8600M GT, 4GB RAM combination of hardware. any idea, where could be the bottleneck and how to investigate to find it? need more info? let me know.
try disabling the GlyphCache and/or the PixMap Cache whether that improves anything
