This is my third attempt to install Gentoo...

Good Things first
Got Python, g++, Numeric to work
Got KDE and themes to make look pretty
Got opera (did not work with portge thought, I did the g'ld make install make dance...)
Got Apache and SSL to display my stuff

Bad things
Sound (Is compilled on the kernel but cannot modprobe )
PHP -> ebuild /var/db/pkg/dev-lang/php-4.1.2-r7/php-4.1.2-r7.ebuild config) Just says that config is not a valid option !!!
Mozilla -> emerge mozilla took forever ( like 3 hours ) before I kill it
Python -> couldnt load Tkinter sooo I installed Tc/Tck and even after that python couldnt import those modules. They say that I have to reinstall- reconfigure `python so I decided uninstall-reinstall,well the unmerge part broke portage ... I was on the directory by the time and it aborted it

Now I dont have either python nor portage
this is what I have instead

luis@sqlla luis $ emerge
/usr/bin/env: python2.2: No such file or directory
luis@sqlla luis $ python
bash: python: command not found

I dont know i fI should reinstall everything (its kinda fun) or fix portage which can be NOT fun

Anyways I am open to pointers suggestions rants etc

Try a forum search for "portage AND rescue AND tarball" for how to fix your portage. Mozilla does take forever to compile - it is a huge program - be patient. If you have sound support compiled directly into your kernel, you don't need to call modprobe. You only need modprobe if you compile something as a module.

Perhaps /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE

Fixed portage, thank you for the link

Now PHP, it cannot configure it

bash-2.05a# ebuild /var/db/pkg/dev-php/php-4.2.1-r3/php-4.2.1-r3.ebuild config
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: pkg_config: command not found

What I am doing wrong?

Well, sadly I don't know what you're doing wrong (or if in fact you did anything wrong), but I just installed Gentoo on my server last night and when I went to run the ebuilds after the apache install I get the same error. I'll let you know if I figure anything out. Hopefully someone posts an idea...

So here's the deal (in case you did figure it out yet). The desktop guide is now thoroughly out of date. The reason that running ebuild /var/db/.../php*.edbuild is because that is now the command line interpreter. Php for Apache is now referred to as mod_php. If you emerge that and then run ebuild /var/db/.../mod_php.ebuild config you should be good to go. If I'm not being clear, then you might want to read this post. That's how I figured it out.
