| Hmm, every kernel since 2.6.16 gets 'tainted kernel' whenever it tries to intialize ethernet for me! |

Both boxes run 'named', 'ntpd' and not much else.
Just realised that I don't need SMP support... Slowly removing unnecessary stuff from the kernel.  |

sun fire v450 - ultrasparc IIIi - running kernel version 2.6.26-r2
check out bug 214765. using the following helped with the kernel compile:
make CROSS_COMPILE="/usr/bin/sparc64-unknown-linux-gnu-" ...
not sure if it's the best thing to do, but was mentioned in the comments and worked for me. |

| I currently run 2.6.25-gentoo-r6 on my Fire v100, although I could only compile it after installing the system with a 2.6.16 install cd. |
