Ok, another "read before bugging KDE herd on IRC" ;)

There's problem emerging kde-4.1.2 with avahi use flag (kdnssd-4.1.2) resulting mdnsresponder and avahi daemon blocking each other - the solution is on the way.

Hello!!
I'm using the overlay from the kde-testing team, i updated to get the 4.1.2 version, tried to update to 4.1.2, but i got slotted packages
why is 4.1.1 getting slotted instead of updated? is there a way to update instead of slotting?
i know i should have unmerged kde-4.1.1 before installing 4.1.2, but i thought it would just get updated -3-
by the way, i'm using kdeprefix, but the guide said it only slotted minor versions such as 4.1 and 4.2, does that have to do with my problem?

regards

I have the same problem, but then without kdeprefix. Is there any clean (and relatively simple) way of doing this. I'd rather not unmerge all kde packages first, this will leave my computer much less usable for a few hours, which I'd rather not.

Emerged successfully kde-4.1.2 ... had to update two files /etc/conf.d/xdm and what I think was /etc/init.d/xdm.

If I issue startx, instead of the grey X-window, I now get to see splashscreen of KDE4 (and kde4-background). But when I boot the box it tries to log into X (for a brief moment I get to see the mouse-pointer), then the screen defaults back to konsole.

Also, startkde gives me the following:
Code:

basename: missing operand
Try `basename --help' for more information.
basename: missing operand
Try `basename --help' for more information.
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

Never mind my question, I found out that you can use change_slot from the kde-portage overlay.

Yesterday I successfully merged kde-meta-4.1.2.

My way of merging:

Before installing I updated qt to 4.4.2 .
And also portage to newest available 2.2_rc11
I added kdeprefix use flag.
I forbade the installer upgrading my python from 2.4.3-r4 to 2.5.2-r7.
I installed app-pda/libopensync-0.35 instead of version 0.36.

This solved to me many encountered problems,
and I hope this might help you too :P.

Hi All,

I've successfully 'downgraded' from kde-svn to 4.1.2 in portage, it feels good to get back to using official tree :) However I've got 2 minor issues that I just want to check before I submit bugs

1. I can't connect to GTalk in kopete any more, it works fine in kde-svn. Using the instructions from here I get:
Code:
There was a negotiation error: Unknown host
if I use port 5222 (instead of 5223) I get:
Code:
There was a Transport Layer Security (TLS) error: failed to establish a secure connection.

2. Korganizer components (calendar, journal etc.) are no longer available in Kontact, although the standalone Korganizer works fine

Having tracked kde-svn for some time I have not seen either of these issues before, any ideas?

Cheers.

Qt4.4 became modular, so you'll have to "emerge -C =qt-4.3*" and let whatever parts of Qt 4.4 to get merged in. If 4.3 tries to creep back in, place it in package.mask - you won't need it.

Unfortunately, gentoo-portage.com is not very well maintained. KDE4 is still not unmasked :(

Yeah, I see it now, I've got the impression as kde-meta was labeled as hardmasked before in gentoo-portage, sorry.

PostPosted: Wed Oct 08, 2008 6:40 pm    Post subject: [solved] sci-libs/cln-1.1.13 fails to compile Reply with quote

I'm having problems compiling KDE 4.1. kde-base/step-4.1.2 pulls in sci-libs/cln-1.1.13 which fails with the error message:
Code:
/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=compile i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -march=pentium4 -mtune=p

 * The die message:

As you can see the actual compiler error cannot be seen as the output is directed to /dev/null (why would anybody want tot do this ). I then manually ran the offending compiler command
Code:
localhost # cd /var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/cln-1.1.13/work/cln-1.1.13/src
localhost src # g++ -march=pentium4 -mtune=pentium4 -O2 -pipe -ftracer -I../include -I./base -c base/random cl_random_def.cc -o cl_random_def.o
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:65: Error: symbol `cl_module__cl_random_def__ctorend' is already defined

Anyone else having this problem? Should I file a bug? Tried re-emerging cln, but always fails at the same spot.

Sam

Edit 1: I tried this on a amd64 machine and it compiles fine. But fails on two different x86 machines (gcc 4.1.2)

Edit 2: Found that there is a bug which says -ftracer causes problems. Added a package specific CFLAG that removes -ftracer just for this and it compiles fine.

So, how long do we have to wait before KDE 4 is green, stable, for Gentoo users?

Well, I guess just as long as any other application would take. It has to be tested before it goes into unstable and some more testing needs to be done before it moves to stable. How long that takes depends on the extent of participation that the testing community provides. So try it out and post all the bugs you discover and things will most probably move forward quite quickly. ;)

PostPosted: Thu Oct 09, 2008 4:05 pm    Post subject: no phonon backends available Reply with quote

Finally got to install kde-4.1 from the kde-testing overlay, but now there seems to be a problem with phonon (at least phonon-xine, haven't installed phonon-gstreamer).
I used to have kde-4.1 from the kdesvn-portage overlay and phonon worked perfectly, using the xine backend.
Now I've got phonon-xine from kde-testing installed, but on the backend tab of the sound settings menu, there seems to be no backends available, has anyone got the same problem??

I've just finished my kde-4.1 installation. Very nice job to the maintainer team :) Despite some small problems (due to collision) everything was fine
