"emerge -uv world" wants to install core-utils-5.0-r3. I've got no problem with this, I'm happy to let it do so - a little confused though, as it says in the description that coreutils provides things I've already got, and yet coreutils isn't currently installed. Is it a newer replacement? I don't quite know what's going on here.

Anyway, my main problem is that it claims the C preprocessor /lib/cpp fails the sanity check, and refuses to compile as a result. It says "Check config.log" - I had a quick poke-around in /var/tmp/portage, assuming this would be where the attempted compile had taken place, and couldn't find the mentioned file, nor have I found any other postings or bug reports about this problem (after an admittedly brief search, but still).
