|
|
Descent is the only game I play, and I have the following issues/questions I'd like to open up for discussion:
* I have Descent 3, but on my new hardware (Lenovo Thinkpad T61 w/ Core 2 Duo and Intel graphics) it locks the computer after playing the intro video. Any ideas?
* What is the state of the free projects D2X-Rebirth and D2X-XL, esp. on newer hardware like mine?
* Finally, do you know where to obtain Descent 2? I would need the data to play D2X-Rebirth/XL. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

It's more likely trying to switch to a screen resolution that your monitor doesn't support. Try running it windowed, to be able to change its settings:

d2x-rebirth will run like a dream. d2x-xl will look much better with the hi-res models, but its changelog shows a million bugs.

Ebay, or some other second-hand site. |

Sadly, this does not work -- X still locks up. Xorg.log output:

Well, a quick google for that and I can easily blame your intel video. |

Thanks for the tip -- should have found that myself
Unfortunately, the suggested tweaks don't work with the unmasked driver, and the masked driver has compatibility issues with the kernels have tried -- will likely have to wait until things stabilize. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

I found a working keyword-masked combination: kernel tuxonice-2.6.24-r9, Mesa 7.0.3, xorg-server 1.4.0.90-r3 and xf86-video-i810 2.4.2-r1.
So for Descent 3, I graduated from the bug above to this one
nexuiz and ppracer work, though at a lower performance than I would expect (~30 fps at medium settings and ~30 fps respectively, both at 1440x900@32). _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Indeed, d2x-rebirth works like a dream. Updated the bug for latest version.
It certainly does look far inferior to Descent3, so I look forward to trying d2x-XL. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

How did it turn out? d2x-xl seems more active, but I am not sure which one I should use _________________ The Creature from Jekyll Island. |

Because it was buggy I never tried it; there was a new release today and Paul's ebuild will likely need to be updated. The installation procedure looks rather hairy so I can't tell you when I'll get to it ...
Descent3 still trips the same bug even though I updated to kernel 2.6.29, xorg-server 1.5.3-r5 and xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-r1 ... _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Return to Castle Wolfenstein trips the same bug as Descent3. These old, binary games are doing something the GM965 OpenGL doesn't like ...
(The bug: scrambled image on the display after about half a second of game operation, frozen X; magic SysRq keys work, and I use them to reboot.) _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Hypnos:
Is this a 32bit game and you are running on amd64?
The intel 965 driver do not like the 6.x mesa of the emul package.
You have to build your own 32 bit mesa.
Maybe you want to test this overlay

vlooe,
The reports on Bug 204755 sound like mine, and it does look like Steve Newbury has a working solution. Unfortunately, it looks like a bit of a mess, and I don't want to get into it for a game; I need working emul-* packages for more critical apps.
Does emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20081109 in Portage have Mesa-7.* ? (I just tried 20080810, failure.) _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |
