I searched and I did not find a previous poll about this. Anyway, I am curious what the results will be. I just want to compare my usage with everyone else's.

EDIT: Just to clarify the question slightly, If you copy ebuilds from other overlays into your own personal overlay to use, I think that is a different aspect of overlay usage. In that case, exclude those overlays from your count. It may be interesting to run a poll with that question as well.

EDIT: Title change, again. Poll ends in 6 months, but I cannot fit that in the title.

Well - For me it depends on the system. I maintain 2 Gentoo Servers and my personal Workstation.

While the Servers are clean - no overlays installed - I have pulled in 4 overlays on my workstation. But I am not sure which of those I really use.
  • sunrise overlay: There are various small packages I need
  • enlightenmant overlay: for testinstalling enlightenment 17 - but I don't really use it
  • zen-overlay: needed for some (zen-)kernel testing, but I stick with gentoo sources for the time being
  • desktop-effects: I cannot remember why it is installed - possibly because I intended to test compiz

I had kdesvn-portage installed for a few days to test kde-4.1, but I cannot use it ATM, as I still need some packages, that rely on qt-4.3, rather on qt-4.4 - and I am not that unpatient.

I voted 4, although it might be a bit high...

cheers
V.

After having the second inconsitency in dependencies between 2 overlays I decided to use just the ebuilds needed in my private overlay. So you could say I use 1 overlay or 8 overlays, depending on the point of view.

Maybe this makes it clear why I am not a fan of overlays.

I selected one, because really there's only one that I use full time, although 1.3 would probably be about right. About every three to six weeks I pull in an overlay to try something I think I need, but without fail I've either found a better solution within portage repo or decided it just wasn't so great an application period.

Giving a number is really hard. I think most people want just a few ebuilds from some overlays, and so I guess, for many people it actually does not make sense to pull in entire overlays (of course, there are some exceptions like kde for which a whole overlay is really reasonable). Usually, I just copy those few ebuilds which I want into my personal overlays and then erase the rest of the overlay; so I guess the correct number should be 0.

It would be nice if there would be a more standardized way to fetch/update just a single package from some overlay. (For some overlays there is some web-interface, for others not; and of course also a web interface is not really a standardized solution.)

I have experienced some of this as well.

Oh my. I am impressed. 8O How are you able to handle it? Maybe I should look into how Paludis works.

P.S. Please, lets not get into "this package manager, that package manager" type of discussion. There are enough posts covering that.

currently paludis is not my package-manager of choice:

I'm using it for syncing all of the overlays (it's a little more convenient for me to enter paludis -s),

portage is able to handle all of the overlays (I've entered them into /etc/make.conf),

some packages needed to be masked - don't ask me which they were, that was a long time ago ;)

I use my local overlay and the desktop-effects overlay for some eye candy.

Is there a way to check what overlays are actually in use? layman reports 7 overlays, but I suspect at least one of those are not used, since whatever package I wanted from it was found to not be what I wanted after all.

I only use one overlay (desktop-effects) for compiz because the versions in portage are too old.

I only use one overlay, enlightenment, since e17 is my Desktop shell (as they call it) of choice, on both my pc and laptop

I want to apologize to the people using 7 or more overlays for not making the poll go to 20 or something. I did not mean to cluster all of you together.

I, for one, keep a personal /usr/local/portage around, in case I need to modify an ebuild, download one from bgo, etc.

This doesn't count layman overlays - only what you keep yourself.

I have:

games-arcade/ppracer, with patch for more joystick buttons support (8->19, to support my sixaxis)
games-arcade/supertux, the 0.3.1 slotted ebuild

media-gfx/f4l, not that it works.

net-mail/mailutils, I forget why...

app-cdr/k9copy, with the new-ffmpeg patch

x11-base/xorg-server, version 1.4.2, never got it to compile. On the beta of the new one now.

net-nds/openldap, forget why...

games-sports/xmoto, version 0.4.1 from a while ago.

what's in yours?

https://trac.allenjb.me.uk/overlay - I used to manage it manually, but since I've put it in subversion, it's become much easier to manage because I can safely delete the packages I'm not interested in or have no use for any more and still be able to recover them if I want. It's also easier to share it between all my machines (2 laptops, 2 pc's (1 of which is a xen host), 2(+) xen guests and a xen server). Making it public was a logical small step, since I was publishing many of the packages on my website anyway (I do push the ones I believe are suitable into bugzilla, but many of them are custom patches or development branches which would never make it into the main tree).

Bazaar overlay, local, with ebuilds from/for Bugzilla. Most are maintainer-wanted/needed.

Way, way to much stuff:
Code:
# find /mnt/gentoo.overlay/ -name "*.ebuild" | wc -l
444
#
Code:
# find /mnt/gentoo.overlay/ -maxdepth 2 -mindepth 2 -type d | wc -l
236
#

Most stuff is own made ebuilds not found in Portage or any overlay.
