What optimizations are you using? I've heard of "optimizing into oblivion" and this sounds like what it would result in...

I love mplayer and i think it's a great program, but all the mplayer developers are f**king jerks

Of course this isn't the only thing they've been jerks about, the whole gcc-2.96 stuff and how cocky they are. Their attitude makes me use xine

I wouldn't say they're cocky... well, maybe about GCC-2.96. But I think they're certainly within reason on that issue (I wouldn't touch 2.96 w/ a 10 foot pole)... but about that error message.

First of all, English is not the native language of the head developer, afaik. What he means by "this shouldn't happen" is this:

Quote:
This is a bad thing. We don't want it to happen.

I guess you interpreted it as:

Quote:
This is your fault. It wouldn't normally happen to MPlayer.

Is that why you were unusually angered by the error? Or is it just the fact that the software is buggy (which is it, to some extent... and they admit that)?

Nothing special I'm not the optimize to the point of breakage kind of person :), in fact, I stepped them down to just --march=athlon-xp (pentium3 on a different box) -O2 -pipe.
I got the same results on both.

It sounds like it may be a hardware problem then (assuming it is not an mplayer bug, which is much harder to check if it is)...

Try memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/)... it will tell you if you have bad RAM.

Also, are you overclocking the CPU? That would do it...

Also (another also, eh)... try running mplayer with different vo and ao plugins, or just "mplayer -vo null -nosound" to have it do no output, and see if it runs. Try it with other media files/types as well.

mplayer 0.9pre5 is rather old... Maybe you should try the mplayer cvs.

Can you upload that avi (only the first 1 or 2Mb of it) to ftp.mplayerhq.hu ?
upload also a .txt file describing the problem and the full output of
"mplayer -v file.avi"

Bye
