DVD drive has problems reading Audio CDs

Hey there everyone.
I'm experiencing a weird problem at the moment, it started some 2 weeks ago, most likely due to some update i emerged. The drive is a SATA DVD burning device and it always worked fine for me. I'm using the in-kernel NVIDIA SATA drivers and have the AHCI drivers modulized. Now the problem that turns up whenever i want to play/rip an audio cd is, that the drive only plays 5 songs (or rips 5 songs) and then stalls (sound-juicer creates 0kb files and then tells me it is done (no error).
It's not even that it was just a matter of duration, even if i start with song number 6, the drive stalls, so it seems as if the drive didn't recognize the tracks correctly. Revdep-rebuild recompiled transcode, sox and ffmpeg, yet that didn't change a thing (although i quite hoped it would).
The versions installed are:

Code: Select all

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20080326 USE="X a52 aac encode ipv6 mmx mp3 sdl truetype vorbis xvid zlib (-altivec) -amr -bindist -debug -doc -hardcoded-tables -ieee1394 -imlib -network -test -theora -threads -x264" 2,447 kB
[ebuild R ] media-video/dvdauthor-0.6.11 282 kB
[ebuild R ] media-sound/sound-juicer-2.20.1-r1 USE="flac ogg -debug -test" 1,380 kB
[ebuild R ] media-video/transcode-1.0.6_rc2-r1 USE="3dnow X a52 dvdread iconv imagemagick jpeg mmx mp3 mpeg ogg oss quicktime sdl sse sse2 truetype vorbis xml xvid (-altivec) -dv -extrafilters -fame -lzo -mjpeg -network -nuv -theora -v4l2" 1,915 kB

Total: 4 packages (4 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 6,022 kB
and my kernel is

Code: Select all

talathar morimando # uname -a
Linux talathar 2.6.25-gentoo-r6 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 14 13:55:14 CEST 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
though it didn't work with 2.6.24-gentoo-r9 as well :(

Anyone here got any idea what might be wrong? I would be very thankful for any hints.
If you need more information, inquire ;)

EDIT: Playback shows the same symptoms: The first 5 tracks (sometimes even the beginning of track 6) work as expected, then the playback stops and it (Totem in this case) begins to scroll down a seemingly endless playlist where no track works... (and it shows more tracks than those that actually are available on the disc, although when loading the disc, the track listing is correct)

EDIT 2: The error is not drive-related nor does it seem to be related to the kernel settings, while banshee, totem and sound-juicer fail to work, ripperX works flawlessly.

Sounds similar to the problems nightmorph is having:

Thanks alot. I joined bug 221145 and provided my kernel config as well as the dmesg output. Hope someone will be able to fix that soon :)
Will keep the thread updated.
