If you are like myself and are irritated constantly by the annoying system beep, but are unwilling to rip the little speaker off your motherboard. it can easily be disabled.

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Uncomment the following line;
Code:
# You probably want this to not get the console beep loud on every tab :)
blacklist pcspkr

For those of you who cant wait till the next reboot;
Code:
sudo rmmod pcspkr

:D

Great ;)

As an addition, if you use Gnome, you can disable the speaker in the audio preferences.

Oh man this is great! I've just been deleting the module which works, until you install a new kernel (I'm lazy & use genkernel). But this is a great & simple way to make it persist. I can't believe this hadn't crossed my mind!

The first thing of which I thought, was to fill the speaker cavity with some epoxy... I did that to an old system I used to have. It muted the sound to the point that you had to have the case open, and be listening closely, in order to hear the beeps. (which came in handy if there were startup errors) The advantage was that it worked no matter which OS you were using. ;)

Lol.. As much as I like things to persist... that would be a little too permanent for me. But that's definitely another solution... Also I only recently became aware of, thanks to a co-worker, the beep device driver in windows as well.

I snip the wires and pry the speaker out of the case.
