Just wanted to put this somewhere searchable since it doesn't appear to be elsewhere in the forums.

The firewire_sbp2 module of the kernel's new IEEE1394 stack has "workaround" options that are intended to overcome some incompatabilities people have experienced. So, if you have a disk-type device that stopped working when you switched to the new firewire stack (like my 2nd-generation iPod), one of these might help resolve the problem.

As an example of how to implement these options, this is what made my crusty old iPod work like a charm again (note the references):
Code:
# /etc/modprobe.d/firewire_sbp2
# Rev. 30 June 2008

# Purpose: allow use of new firewire stack with old (generation 2) iPod.
# Run update-modules after editing this file.

# Re: UPDATE-MODULES(8), MODPROBE.CONF(5), 'modinfo firewire_sbp2'

options firewire_sbp2 workarounds=0x1
