toms rescue discs have been mentioned in the mailing list several times.

http://www.toms.net/rb/

I personally like booting from my Mandrake 8.1 CD because the kernel on teh gentoo CD freezes on every machine I installed it.

I was writing my experience installing gentoo from boot floppy, not much to write yet :x Proplem is incompatiple commands in various boot floppies. Fdisk was easy, found good instructions, included my doc. I did get far as tar command, many boot disks uses busybox, different options what appears in gentoo install docs. http://www.toms.net/rb/ uses too busybox, there is mentined how to go around proplem, but i couldt get it work.

tar and cpio are 'pax' and differ from gnu-tar and gnu-cpio.

Instead of:
tar -xvzf /dev/st0
Use this:
gzip -d < /dev/st0 | tar -xvf -

Also i noticed, at least my machine when bios dosent find cdrom and booting from floppy, cdrom is named hdc in /dev. Wonder if this is same others computers.

I think i find newer cdrom, blast :?

Well, there's always the Gentoo Linux alternative installation method HOWTO for those folks who can't/don't want to use the boot-from-cd method.

Now installing gentoo on another computer. In https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=996 was a solution. ShoobS informed that in http://btmgr.gnuchina.org/ is bootfloppy available. Works for me  Its not linux bootfloppy, but enables cd to boot. Really nice program. Try it if your cd dosent boot. In same post there is user which computer will not boot, so its not 100% solution. Gentoo boot floppy is needed and there IS progress. bs_argh send me email and informed he is making boot floppy. Contact bs_argh to get more info about floppies :!:
