I recently installed Gentoo Linux on a Sun Ultra5 workstation using the iso image from the ibiblio mirror. My keyboard works fine during the installation, but after rebooting none of the keys on the keyboard are mapped correctly. Keys on the number pad act like caps lock, scroll lock and num lock. The "r" key gives me a space and the backspace key gives me a lowercase "b".
My the keymap line from /etc/rc.conf:
KEYMAP="us"
I have looked through the Sparc installation readme and searched this forum without luck.
Thank you for your help. |

You should change the rc.conf file like this:
KEYMAP="sunkeymap"
This should do the trick |

I have a KEYMAP problem, I have set my keymap to sunt5-uk, as I have a UK Sun keyboard, it's actually a type 6, I still get an error on boot up, most of the keys get mapped, but some come up with gobbledy-gook.
Does anyone have a sunt6-uk.map.gz ?
I tried googling for sunt6-uk.map.gz to no avail.
Thanks in advance.
Emails to g.coochey@btinternet.com, but I'll check back in the forums anyway. |

I'm not sure if this will help but I'll say it anyway if you can use it, that's great
I'm using a norwegian type 6 keyboard. To do this, I use sunt4-no-latin1.map.gz keymap (type 4 keymap).
To get it to work, I had to change the control and capslock keys, other than that, everything worked fine. To change these, I unzipped the keymap and edited it. To find the correct keycodes, use the 'showkey' command.
Hope this will help, if not, maybe someone else can use this little tidbit of information

Hiya PimpNasty,
On my Ultra5, I'm using a Sun Type 6 keyboard and the following setting works great for me.
KEYMAP="sunt5-us-cz"
Also, I have not had a problem with the default setting, even those /etc/init.d/keymaps fails at boot time. |

I have the same issue with a Sun Type 5 UK keyboard on an Ultra 10. I have tried setting the KEYMAP setting in /etc/rc.conf to "sunt5-uk" but I get an error message on boot and some of the keys return the wrong characters.
I installed this system yesterday and followed the procedure to update the OS properly.
Setting the KEYMAP setting to "sunkeymap" allows the box to boot without an error message, but this defaults to a US layout on a UK keyboard!
Any help anyone can give will be gratefully accepted! Thanks in advance! |

OK, after taking more time to look at this what should be the £ symbol is returning a ń. This is the only wrong key I have found so far. I extracted the keymap file and looked at the line for that particular key, it read:
keycode 32 = three sterling
Yep, it looks right! But I am not sure where to look from here...
I'm still getting an error message on boot too! |
