|
|
As mentioned in other topics (and elsewhere on the internet) - phpBB 3 is a major upgrade to functionality and usability for the forums, and would solve many problems (especially with the search functionality). I am aware that many code base changes were made to gentoo forums' phpBB install, so I am not suggesting that an upgrade be made as soon as phpBB goes out of release candidate stage.
What would be nice is to hear some opinions (from the devs and admins/mods maintaining this message board) about phpBB 3 (and if an upgrade is possible at all!). If it is - then what are users looking at - phpBB 3 by the start of 2008, mid-2008... ? |

I would like to see an upgrade to phpbb-3 as the new design (or parts of it) and features look promising. I don't see it happen in the near future though: None of the current admins can devote much time at the code atm and there are open issues that have to be adressed first: Conversion to UTF-8 and probably quite a few tests/improvements to phpbb3 regarding scalability, as well as porting our extensions to it.
One thing that would be interesting is getting some reports of other large forums using phpbb-2 - did any of them switch to phpbb-3 yet, has it proven to scale better than phpbb-2? Having some positive reports here might really help us. _________________ KDE |

I am guessing you wouldn't let a relatively inactive member work on the forums... |

correct, though nothing prevents you from getting the sources for the phpbb software that f.g.o is running and porting our mods to phpbb3 _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered

I just had time to look at the changelog HOLY CRAP....
If somebody can help me list the features that were added then I can help porting.
The number of features that have been added are already in phpbb3.
this is the list so far.
- Added date command to run when reporting a tor error. (tomk)
- Added note that it can take up to an hour for the tor blacklist to update (tomk).
- Added a confirmation to the dustbin button for moderators who can't move posts back out again. (Maedhros)
- Don't show profile data if user is inactive, unless you're a mod/admin (tomk)
- Added rackathon link (tomk)
- Show if account has been banned in viewprofile.php - mods/admins only
- Added "View posts since last visit" to forum/topic/search results pages.
- Don't apply maximum number of poll options for mods/admins
- Ensure the bugzilla link at the bottom of the page is https if using https
- Allow ranks to have colours associated with them, to be shown in the "Who's Online", and "Users browsing this forum" lists.
- Added code to check for updated GLSAs and edit the appropriate post, fixes bug #126339
- Show links in the dustbin for mods/admins
- Added option for hiding poll results until poll closes
-- Allow mods as well as admins to see the results
- Added colour coding to the delete all posts confirm page
- Don't send out PM notifications if notifications diables in the ACP
- Added auto language detection mod - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=148965
- Make link from profile/dustbin ban return to framed ACP index after re-authentication
- Allow [code="/etc/make.conf"] style bbcode tags, fixes bug #106124
- Allow PM data to be emailed as an attachment
-- Made COPPA stuff always override other activation methods
- Use GLSA rdf feed to post GLSAs to N&A forum, fixes bug #114861
- Show registration IP in various places: ACP, modcp view ip, memberlist
- Added optional Google Analytics javascript
- Dustbin button:
-- Moves topic to dustbin
-- Gives you a 'find all posts by' link
-- Gives you a link to report the spammer in the 'Accounts used for SPAM' topic
-- If you're an admin it gives you a link to ban the user
I just pulled stuff from the changelog of the cvs |

Also on that note. I will most likely make this a hook mod and not a direct integration to ease upgrading to future versions. |

I'm afraid that Changelog isn't complete since there are changes from before we used CVS. _________________ Please read our FAQ Forum, it answers many of your questions.

Blarg really?
I guess I'll just use diff to figure out what is different then try to port it over to phpbb3... Can anybody who has worked on the current forums explain what main features are core and vital? I was thinking of doing the majority of the work over winter break. |

PHPBB 3.0.0 was released about 2 weeks ago, so should Gentoo make the switch to PHPBB 3.0.0? |

Most of the features phpbb 3 offers have already been implimented such as utf-8 support or a "report topic" function.
The others aren't really nesesarry.
So: No
Ps: It's not even in the portage tree yet so it will take at least 2 months before phpbb 3 can be marked "gentoo-stable" _________________ Black Holes are created when God divides by zero! |

Complete answer. I know that a some of the new features are allready here, but the most impact would be psychological: a new look. Gentoo is doing great in some areas: it is along debian the most updated distro, but on the users I think that it had more better times. The forums and the wiki are with less people active as I see things. So I think a nicer forum would help. |

I would like to see phpbb3, but I completely understand how difficult it will be given all the modifications made to the existing phpbb2 installation. I currently have no problems with the phpbb2, except that the search feature is a little lacking. However, there are workarounds in place. _________________ “Truth, like infinity, is to be forever approached but never reached.” --Jean Ayres (1972)

I think is time to switch... but at parity of db dimension, that can be a speed up? I don't think that the phpbb2.0 is slow but an improvement of speed for the searching thing is a good idea _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yoJI-Tl94g GLORY GLORY HYPNOTOAD |

If you'd like to help, feel free.
Hint: switching is not nearly as simple as installing it and running the converter script... _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

Personally I don't give a (insert curse here) on if this board runs phpBB2 or phpBB3 as it's the comunity and the staff who make this forum great.
Just my 2 cents including duties and taxes...
