We know Gentoo is a distro which is more complex than others!
We use Gentoo because we want to study more about linux, dig into deep and deeper!
In this post, i don't want to say much about power of Gentoo!
-------------------
Gentoo's heart is portage! Portage make sofware install processing become so easy!
So, we don't know about how that software was compile , its compile options,...
Because Portage was solve all of them for out => We don't need think, study,...
Instead of studing to compile PHP,Apache, Mysql , u emerge them!
if try to compile them, u realize that it must install Apache first, then install mysql then install php! If u install php first, u don't have mysql header files...)
But i u use portage, u will not know these things!
But if don't use portage, Gentoo is not Gentoo!
Is it hard to understand? |

Yeah, use LFS to figure that out, then use Gentoo when you get tired of doing virtually the same thing over and over again (installing apache 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3,...) |

I set up a a LFS server at my house years ago and it is still running today. I had i running (hosting a website and doing other misc. things) for two years straight (never powered off).
It really needs to be updated now though as I imagine there are probably some security vulnerabilities :S Though, they (actually, I have two personal severs, the other is running slackware) will be powered off and stored or thrown away (I got them both for free ^^) when I go to college this year anyway.
LFS certainly taught me a lot though ^^ Fun little two week project (majority of that time was compiling and having to start over once because I made a huge mistake somewhere...). |
