|

Hello all,
while following the news about the upcomming gentoo-gcc3.1 release, I found this on the gnu homepage (http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-3.2/changes.html)
Quote: |
GCC 3.2 Changes, New Features, and Fixes
Caveats
This GCC release is based on the GCC 3.1 sourcebase, and thus has all the changes in the GCC 3.1 series. In addition, GCC 3.2 has a number of C++ ABI fixes which make its C++ compiler generate binary code which is incompatible with the C++ compilers found in earlier GCC releases, including GCC 3.1 and GCC 3.1.1.

So what does this mean ? When switching to gcc3.2 I have to reformat my disk and merge everything again ? Or even worse, do I have to beg to the non-opensource vendors to release a 2.x, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.x version of their code ?
Please don't get me wrong, this issue is nothing about gentoo directly , I really like this distribution because it's probably as close to the linux-concept as a distribution can be; but my point is about the gnu-compiler-guys and the way this affects everything built with their tools. And *please* correct me if I got this wrong, but up to me this paragraph sounds like : "Hey, switching the ABI again ? Ok, who cares ..." |
