Rather than just unpacking the archive contents, open the archive in a suitable (GUI based) program, and then put the contents of the archive /bin directory in your bin directory, and in /usr/bin.
Could you be more specific on the error messages during boot up? The message you explain is the result of the problem rather than the actual error. |

Paulj thank You very much!!!
I have finally got my gentoo to boot normally! Thanks a lot for your patience and sorry for the fact that it was You who carefully analyzed my problems, not me doing exactly what You have written. As You told me, I extracted the files and copied over ones in /bin and /usr/bin. Now my only problem is that after I write 'startx' while being a user nothing really happens, but I can startx as a root normally. But, I hope it will not be such a problem...
Once again thank You for this solution, I was really afraid that I am going to loose my gentoo ...And generally thanks for this thread, I was really lucky that it was quite new one
Best regards! |

OK, I'm another bonehead who did this, and I have gotten the tarball, and gone through the various contortions, which seemed like they were going to work..... however I'm stuck at a place that no one else has mentioned:
I've now got util-linux blocking coreutils. OK, I think, I'll re-emerge util-linux and the block will go away.
When I try to re-emerge util-linux, I get stopped on this:
Code: | /usr/lib/portage/bin/ebuild.sh: line 1515: id: command not found
|
It seems the id command was not included in Voltago's tarball, and it doesn't seem to be anywhere else on my system.
I'd like to avoid the liveCD boot route if there's an easier option for getting beyond this. Any ideas??
Thanks very much,
Dave |

Under what circumstances did you unemerge coreutils?
A package depending on it I guess? _________________ |spectre-net - my site about nothing | OOSBÈ! DOOVDÈ! | Take me to your dealer | |

id is in voltago's tarball - it is under the usr/bin sub-directory. Copy the contents of the bin subdirectory to bin, and the contents of the usr/bin sub-directory to /usr/bin.
Then try again! |

D'oh! It was there, wasn't it... I've now re-emerged util-linux and coreutils and I'm back in business. Thanks.
