hi,i need some help
i'm trying to get my camera to work,i have a creative Live vista IM.i'll try to give some information if anyone can help.When i type lsusb i get
Quote:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 041e:4052 Creative Technology, Ltd
so i read that the ov51x is the right module for this camera.so i downloaded and installed it but when i type xawtv -c /dev/video i get
Quote:
This is xawtv-3.95, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.22-gentoo-r2)
WARNING: v4l-conf is compiled without DGA support.
can't open /dev/video: No such device
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video: No such device
v4l2: open /dev/video: No such device
v4l: open /dev/video: No such device
no video grabber device available

so i tried this
Quote:

> rm /dev/video /dev/video0
> mknod /dev/video0 c 81 0
> chmod 666 /dev/video0
> chgrp video /dev/video0
> ln -s /dev/video0 /dev/video

when i type xawtv -hwscan i get this
Quote:
This is xawtv-3.95, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.22-gentoo-r2)
looking for available devices
port 115-115
type : Xvideo, image scaler
name : ATI Radeon Video Overlay

but stil i get this error
Quote:
open /dev/video0: No such device

also the symlink seems to be ok when i type ls -la /dev/video
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2008-04-13 15:24 /dev/video -> /dev/video0
i don't know what else to think,any ideas?
thanks in advance

update : when i type camorama in my console i get the same message as xawtv,
Quote:
could not connect to video device /dev/video0,please check connection
and last info,with this command dmesg |grep -i 'camera' i get this result:
Quote:
/home/zoe/Desktop/ov51x-jpeg-1.5.6/ov51x-jpeg-core.c: Camera initialization failed
/home/zoe/Desktop/ov51x-jpeg-1.5.6/ov51x-jpeg-core.c: 1.5.6 : ov51x USB Camera Driver
.So something is wrong here but i don't know how to fix it

Do you have v4l support in the kernel?
remove the module
unplug the camera
plug in the camera
modprobe the module
post dmesg

thanks for the answer.it seems that i don't have the ov51x installed which is strange because everything was fine before a restart that i did.yes i have v4l as module in my kernel because it doesn't let me have as built in(i have two options in my kernel,module or nothing!).so i tried to install the driver again but i get this when i try to make install as root
Quote:

i don't understand why it complains about the amd64-agp.ko,can anyone explain this to me?it should be intel agp or ati maybe

Update:i don't understand what is going on,when my machine starts i see that is loading the module ov51x_jpeg!so i tried to get the dmesg in order to post it and did as comprookie2000 proposed.so when i plugged the camera again and try to load the ov51x_jepg i got this from dmesg
Quote:

Quote:

in my kernel i have video 4 linux as module and built in video for API 1.if i type grep -i v4l /usr/src/linux/.config i get this
Quote:
# CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1 is not set
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1_COMPAT=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L2=y

If you want the module
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L2=y
to
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L2=m

That's the starnge thing i was talking about.in this screenshot of my kernl config

i have it as module as you suggest.but when i type
Quote:
grep -i v4l /usr/src/linux/.config
i see that it understands it as built-in.maybe that's the problem why i can't modprobe videodev.
any ideeas?

What happens when you change the * to m down below?
also open the others up and see if v4L2 is inside, same thing change anything to m
I not at home now so I can't look at mine, but I will check later.

wait,i'm getting somwhere finally after all this hours
i did again th hole procedure,i installed the driver again,i fixed the v4l to be like module and to understand in the kernel so it is something like that
Quote:
CONFIG_VIDEO_DEV=m
# CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1 is not set
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1_COMPAT=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L2=y
# CONFIG_VIDEO_CAPTURE_DRIVERS is not set
# CONFIG_RADIO_ADAPTERS is not set
# CONFIG_DVB_CORE is not set
# CONFIG_DAB is not set

So this is ok,then i can
Quote:
modprobe videodev
modprobe i2c_core
modprobe ov51x-jpeg

so now when i unplugged the camera and plugged it again i have a result,it opens the window for my camera but i see only colors but thta's a big step,i'll try tio fix this
for any ideas please sent
