Hi,
I had installed "nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r2". When I tried "emerge -up world", no updates were available. I looked at the portage ebuilds and saw that a newer version of the package is available. I installed it via giving the exact ebuild name. However, now, when I "emerge -up world", the result is:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r2 [1.0.4496-r1]
Why update to an older one?
Thanks. |

You're almost certainly using the stable version of portage. To install the unstable (i.e., apparently working but not yet sufficiently tested to be marked stable) version of nvidia-kernel, do the following:
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge nvidia-kernel |
If you want to upgrade *everything* to the latest (and somewhat untested) versions, then edit your /etc/make.conf file and change
Code: | #ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~arch" |
to
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" |
|

Thanks in advance.
One more question:
The Installation Guide says: "The nvidia-kernel, ati-drivers and xfree-drm packages will require additional configuration to be enabled."
Additional configuration?..
Thanks again. |

Well, you'll have to change your XF86Config-4.
Change the driver from nv to nvidia:
section "Device"
Identifier ...
Driver "nvidia" |

Shall I get extra performance doing this?
Thanks. |

If you don't change this, then X will just not use the drivers you installed.
The nv drivers come with X, the nvidia drivers come with nvidia-kernel
nv doesn't provide a lot of hardware acceleration, and NO 3D acceleration.
This makes all the difference, try glxgears before and after changing the driver
NOTE: You'll have to restart X after changing XF86Config-4
If you're running gdm or kdm, just log out and do a CTR-ALT-BACKSPACE for good measure.
Enjoy, but feel a little dirty. |
